Since I am a preteen of the 1990s, I think of “First Knight” when I hear Camelot. My mother associates Camelot with the Kennedys. Hinkley Outdoor Lights named their collection of outdoor lights, Camelot, to inspire the feeling of romantic castles and suspense of court intrigue. Is Lancelot faithful to his King but in love with Guinevere? This traditional outdoor lighting collection includes more than the two wall lanterns pictured above. Although I am listening to Spanish guitar as I write this blog post, I’m not really feeling strong San Clemente influences in this lighting family. However, I will give myself a reading assignment. Sadly, I have not read Jose Echegaray’s plays, The Avenger’s Wife, Conflict of Duties and Madman or Saint. Echegaray was born in Madrid. He was a professor of Greek, a student of engineering and economics. He was also a playwright. His plays won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904.

I admit I am deficient in my knowledge of  literature from Spain. I am only familiar with Spanish speaking writers from Argentina and Colombia such as Borges and Marquez. Shame on me. In my opinion, this museum black finish set of energy saving fluorescent outdoor lighting by Hinkley Outdoor Lighting has more in common with traditional lighting than Mediterranean or Rustic lights. The simple ironwork is not as ornate as Mediterranean scrollwork or as weathered as rustic outdoor lighting. It is too Old World to be transitional. It’s also too clean in design to be Victorian lighting. Maybe my evaluation of this lighting family will change as I study more literature about the art and culture of Spain.

If I had to choose, I’d say that Hinkley Outdoor Lighting’s San Clemente shares more in common with the Cathedral of Leon or Toledo than the 13th century Cathedral of Avila in Spain. However, San Clemente traditional outdoor lights do show Gothic architecture influences. You can see the dark finish and clear glass traditional style especially in the outdoor wall lantern. Select this family of traditional outdoor lighting fixtures with olde iron post lights. You can also ask for bronze finish instead of museum black.

This traditional outdoor lighting family of energy efficient post lights, wall sconces, and hanging ceiling pendant lights has sparked curiosity in me. What were the most significant art and design movements in Spain from the 13th century to the Romantic period? Because of Hinkley Outdoor Lighting’s San Clemente, I must find out.
